Final Day To Contribute To "Septembeard" Fight Against Prostate Cancer
As the month of September winds down, so does the opportunity to contribute to "Septembeard" in the fight against prostate cancer.
Mount Olive College director of athletics Jeff Eisen and head men's basketball coach Joey Higginbotham have been refraining from shaving during the month of September for "Septembeard," a program designed to raise funds in the fight against prostate cancer. The two are dedicating their efforts to Barton College head men's basketball coach Ron Lievense.
(Update: Ron Lievense underwent successfull surgery and has been reporting to work on a very limited basis.)
"We are pleased to be able to participate in this campaign to raise funds for prostate cancer research and to raise awareness of such a dangerous disease for men," said Eisen. "We might be showing some gray in our beards – certainly me more than Joey - but it is worth it for such an important cause."
While Mount Olive and Barton have always been bitter rivals on the basketball court, both Higginbotham and former Trojan head men's basketball coach Bill Clingan have established friendships with Lievense, who attended Clingan's induction into the MOC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008.
"I'm happy to support this campaign for prostate cancer in honor of not only my colleague in college coaching, but a personal friend, Ron Leivense," said Higginbotham, who enters his sixth year as the Trojans' head coach. "I have the utmost respect for Ron as a person and a coach. I know he is dealing with a great deal right now and being the competitor he is, I have no doubt he will beat this."
Higginbotham added, "While Barton is a rival for us here at Mount Olive College, at this time our thoughts and prayers go out to him, his family and the Barton College Community.
