Ryan Campbell, Aerostata Brown Earn Athlete Of The Year Honors At Conference Carolinas Indoor Track And Field Championships
Mount Olive College captured the top individual awards for field events as Ryan Campbell was named Men's Field Athlete of the Year and Aerostata Brown was named Women's Field Athlete of the Year at the 2013 Conference Carolinas Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at Winston-Salem, N.C. The event marked the first-ever indoor track and field championship in Conference Carolinas.
In addition, Dylan Lafond was named 2013 Conference Carolinas Men's Indoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year, becoming the first student-athlete in Trojan history to earn freshman of the year honors in two different sports. Lafond was also the 2012 Conference Carolinas Men's Cross Country Freshman of the Year.
In the team standings, Mount Olive finished fourth in the men's championship and third in the women's championship.
Campbell captured a pair of All-Conference Carolinas awards, winning the shot put to earn first team honors and finishing third in the weight throw for third team honors. Lafond finished first in the mile and the 3000 meters to garner two All-Conference Carolinas first team awards.
Mount Olive finished with a total of nine men's All-Conference Carolinas awards. Nick Mac Adam won a pair of all-conference awards, finishing second in the long jump and third in the triple jump. Ronnie Sturgill placed second in the 5000 meters and Sebastian Jackson was second in the weight throw. Aki Kitagawa finished third in the 3000 meters.
On the women's side, Brown took three All-Conference Carolinas first team awards with three first-place finishes. Brown won the 60 meter dash, the long jump and the triple jump.
Jaynell Brown, a two-time Conference Carolinas Women's Field Events Athlete of the Week winner this season, grabbed all-conference first team honors with a first-place finish in the shot put. Megan Bucek, Christina Jordan, Dorna Spence and Daisy Thomas earned third team honors in the distance medley.
King won both the men's and women's team championships.
Mount Olive has one final indoor meet as Trojan competitors try to earn qualifying marks for the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Trojans head to Fairfax, Va., February 17 to compete in the George Mason University Last Chance Meet.
